Low Cost Paper-Based Strip Tests for Detection of Mycotoxins in Grains

Crop Types
  • Whole Farm
Collaborating Locations

Background

Mycotoxin analysis can help with decision making, however, sampling issues mean that many samples must be taken to gain the required confidence. This can add up in costs if the method of analysis is not affordable.Based on our estimates for the cost of the preparation of our lateral flow strips (and factoring in economies of scale), we estimate that our tests will cost less than $5 per test (goal is $1 per test) and will give results in five minutes. The ability to screen samples quickly at the farm or grain elevator with minimal training and resources will support better decision along the supply chain and ultimately save money.

Objectives

  1. Optimization and scale up of test kits for Ochratoxi A
  2. Development of other single mycotoxin test strips
  3. Multiplexed mycotoxin test strips
  4. Pilot field test at the grain elevator to examine if tests are accurate, precise, user friendly, rapid and robust.
