This project will support the corn breeding program out of AAFC Ottawa. The goals of this program are to develop corn inbreds suitable for Canadian growing conditions with appropriate disease resistance.
The University of Manitoba has established a perennial grain program headed by Doug Cattani. He has followed two intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) (Kernza®) nurseries established in Carman for up to three reproductive years after transplanting to ascertain the sustainability of seed yields.
The goal of this program is to develop agronomic best management practices and improve agrometerological tools for successful corn production in Manitoba. This multi-disciplinary program will engage a network of scientists at the University of Manitoba to work on corn agronomy.
By evaluating the response of Canadian wheats grown in Western Canada to specific nitrogen and sulfur agronomic management strategies, western Canadian producers will be able to demonstrate that they are utilizing best management practices to reduce creation of the acrylamide precursor. By targeting the genetic precursors of acrylamide through breeding programs, Canada’s wheat industry will demonstrate serious intent to reduce food safety risks in its domestic and export supply.
The main goal of this project is to develop short- and long-term strategies for mitigating the effects of excess moisture on wheat yield an quality.
It is important to evaluate optimal corn row spacing in Manitoba using shorter season hybrids and inbreds under development.
This project will support Manitoba Crop Alliance’s farmer-led hybrid confection sunflower breeding program. Hybrids with herbicide and disease resistance, suitable for Canadian growing conditions will be selected. This project is apart of the 2023 Diverse Field Crops Cluster.Â
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the consistency of distributionin large air seeders (60′ width) and effect of fan speed on distribution and seed damage for small (canola), medium (wheat), and large (soybean) seed.
The purpose of this project is to understand issues, identify common obstacles and seek opportunities to strengthen and create long-term economic sustainability in the feed supply relationship between the crop production and livestock sectors in Manitoba.
This project will provide understanding how new high yielding spring wheat varieties respond to management practices such as nitrogen management, PGR application and seeding rate. This will allow for farmers to fine-tune agronomy to reduce risk to yield and quality loss from lodged field.
