Identifying weed competitive varieties in wheat and barley

Crop Types
  • Barley
  • Wheat
Collaborating Locations

Background

Competitive varieties are often recommended to producers as an integrated weed management strategy.
However, unlike disease resistance or maturity ratings, there is no information available for producers on which wheat and barley varieties are the most competitive with weeds, at least in western Canada. Research has been conducted on various varieties previously and desirable traits noted, but no work has gone into creating rankings and making them available for producers.
This project aims to begin rating commercialized Canadian varieties for competitiveness.

Objectives

  1. Investigate current wheat and barley varieties for competitiveness
  2. Develop a trial methodology to produce competitiveness rankings for newly registered varieties
  3. Identify characteristics that are highly associated with competitiveness for future use in breeding and germplasm selections.
