Enhancing capacity of barley breeding programs in western canada: establishing disease nurseries and a pre-breeding platform

Crop Types
  • Barley
Collaborating Locations

Background

Diseases are one of the biggest foes associated with barley production in Canada; Fusarium head blight (FHB) in particular is the most dangerous as it produces mycotoxin in the grain thus affecting malting and marketing. This project has multi-faceted benefits to the western Canadian barley industry. The proposal will enhance disease screening capacity of three public barley breeders including Drs. Beattie (SK), Badea (MB), Capettini (AB) for their early and advanced barley breeding material.

Objectives

  1. Setting-up barley stripe rust and Fusarium head blight (FHB)/DON uniform disease nursery at the UBC Totem Research Farm.
  2. Sequence, assemble and annotate the genome of wild barley accessions ‘Damon 11-11’.
  3. Developing pre-breeding germplasm (for breeders) with sequence configured wild barleys and elite cultivars.
