For Researchers

How we review projects

Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) intakes projects for funding from a variety of different streams. We review proposals submitted through the Saskatchewan Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and the Agriculture Funding Consortium (AFC). We also regularly partner with private and public organizations for submissions to the Manitoba government’s Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership Research and Innovation funding program. Additionally, we oversee our own call for letters of intent (LOIs) for special crops and Whole Farm research.

MCA regularly works with researchers to develop research applications for co-funding for submission to NSERC, Genome Canada, MITACS, Manitoba Agriculture S-CAP, as well as other funding opportunities.

Proposals are reviewed by our research program managers and are evaluated based on several key principles. We are seeking proposals that are:

  • Innovative and forward thinking
  • Designed to answer farmers’ questions and resolve their issues (reference our Research Overview for a full list of priorities)
  • Solution-oriented, producing information that can directly or indirectly support farmers in making decisions for their operations.

Proposals are reviewed based on the principles above, as well as their fit within the defined priorities set by our research program managers. Proposals are then presented to our crop committees for their recommendation on funding, which is referred to the board of directors for a final decision.

Researchers are encouraged to communicate directly with Research Program Managers during the development of proposals and projects.
