Section Title
Malt Barley Protein and Nitrogen rates – Western
Region
- Western
Background Information
Newer malting barley varieties have been released and are starting to account for many of the seeded acres. Understanding the new varieties fertility requirements, specifically for nitrogen is crucial to optimize these varieties for yield and malt selection.
Results
Significant yield differences were observed in two of the three sites. In all cases, the "normal" rate was the best rate. Only BN03 saw significant differences in protein % among the treatments. With the highest treatment having the highest protein. All three treatments had protein levels higher than 12.5% in this case. Two of three sites had moderate- severe pre-harvest sprouting, but none of these sites saw significant differences among treatments.
