Western Canadian provincial malting barley field trials

Crop Types
  • Barley
Collaborating Locations

Background

One of the challenges faced by the Canadian malting industry has been the acceptance and uptake of varieties after their registration. This project will provide key quality and performance indicators regarding new varieties. The purpose of this project is to use field trials in multiple locations across the Prairies to grow established and new Canadian malting barley varieties annually and generate comprehensive and comparative data on barley quality, malting performance and malt quality, as well as to gather information on agronomic performance and disease resistance.

Objectives

  1. To provide breeders, producers, seed companies, grain companies, maltsters, brewers, and others involved in the Canadian malt barley value chain with an important dataset of annual new crop quality by region, the performance of new varieties compared with established ones, and how defined environmental and agronomic conditions affect the grain quality
  2. Generate comprehensive malting quality data for new malting barley varieties that can be used to promote Canadian barley each year in domestic and international markets.
