Novel biocontrol agents for fungal pathogens in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum)

  • Start date: April, 2022
  • Project Length: 3 Years
  • Project Status: In Progress

Background

A metagenomics study will be conducted to identify mycobiruses from the urediniospores of rust isolates. Potential biocontrol agents could be designed with attraction to plants and urediniospore surfaces.

This project will explore and identify mycoviruses causing hypovirulence in rust fungi to develop "virocontrol" biopesticides.

Objectives:
  • 1: Establish a catalogue of mycoviruses from the 300 rust isolates and correlate to the host virulence
  • 2: Identify peptides with affinity to wheat flag leaves and urediniospores surfaces using the phage display library
