Maximizing feed barley yield while minimizing lodging

Background

The most commonly grown feed barley varieties are between six to twenty years old. However, the recent registration of new barley varieties with promising yield improvements may be opportunities for growers to significantly increase feed barley production. This project would increase adoption of improved barley cultivars on farm and also may make plant growth regulator (PGR) management practices more efficient.

Objectives

  1. Understand how barley cultivars with different genetic traits respond to PGR applications.
  2. Explore PGR application timings on feed barley to consistently minimize lodging while maximizing yield and quality.
  3. Determine production efficiencies by tank-mixing PGRs with herbicides and foliar fungicides.
  4. Establish the yield and yield variability of newly registered barley varieties, grown under intensive agronomic management, under a range of soil types and agro-climatic conditions, and their subsequent suitability for widespread adoption
