Glyphosate or auxinic-resistant kochia and russian thistle prairie surveys

Crop Types

Background

Kochia is a problematic tumbleweed that is present in agricultural and disturbed areas on the prairies. Kochia has developed resistance to many different mode-of-action herbicides including Group 2, Group 9, and Group 4. The objective of this study was to survey glyphosate-resistant and dicamba-resistant kochia distributions in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Key Takeaways

Glyphosate resistance increased significantly from previous studies. GR kochia was found in 58% of Manitoba samples. Dicamba-Resistant kochia was found in 1% of Manitoba sites, the first instance of this in Manitoba. Resistance to both was found in <1% of samples in Manitoba. No HR in Russian thistle was found in Manitoba.
