The Focal Point – Winter 2022 Edition

The second edition of The Focal Point – Manitoba Crop Alliance’s (MCA) research magazine – will be mailed out to members later this month. Building on the research foundation initiated by MCA’s five founding organizations, MCA has established a comprehensive research program to continue to advance the interests and profitability of farmer members.

The Focal Point takes a deeper look at the status of active research projects across all commodities represented by MCA. In the Winter 2022 issue researchers dive into topics such as mitigation and management of Cry1F resistance in European corn borer in Canada, agronomic practices to minimize lodging risk while maximizing yield and protein potential in spring wheat, and optimum plant populations for sunflowers in Manitoba.

In recent years demand for Canadian malting barley has increased due to rising purchases from China and the growth of craft beer production. Research is underway to understand how Canada’s newest malting barley varieties perform in Manitoba.

This issue highlights the priorities of the winter wheat breeding program at the University of Manitoba, and shares an updated vision for Canada’s only public flax breeding program at the University of Saskatchewan.

Last year MCA launched the Whole Farm Research program, a whole-farm, cross-commodity approach to research that is not crop-specific, such as soil health, pest management and crop rotations, and the Whole Farm Research Committee accepted proposals for projects to begin this year (2022).

Each project featured in The Focal Point is proudly funded by MCA. Please contact us if you are interested in reading a copy of The Focal Point.
