Breeding hardier crops for Saskatchewan – dynamic phenotyping to dissect components of water stress in wheat

Crop Types
  • Wheat

Background

This project aims to breed more resilient crop varieties in the face of water stress

Objectives

  1. Determine the optimal hydration protocols to distinguish a reduction in biomass accumulation.
  2. Identify founder lines exhibiting the most extreme variation for biomass accumulation when grown under water stress
  3. Map the underlying quantitative variation controlling biomass accumulation under water stress
  4. Evaluate stress resilient material in field trials comparing performance under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions.
